Q: Is there a place called purgatory?

A: The Church teaches that there is Purgatory. The Church may not have interpreted the Bible as saying that there is only heaven and hell. Purgatory may not even be a place; it could just be a state of the soul. What happens in Purgatory is that the soul goes through some sort of suffering (perhaps by some kind of fire) in order to be purified. The following information summarized in a table takes account of those who are able to reason (usually people above the age of about 7). Young children should be able to go to heaven since they are completely innocent on the subjects of worship and morals. (see the question on infant baptism below.yesyesyesnonononoyes

The soul may choose to burn in penance before it becomes stainless and thus ready to go to heaven. However, depending on the seriousness of the sins, his soul may choose to go to hell (where he cannot see God) due to a deep feeling of guilt. That is also why we pray for the dead; it is because we hope that God, by His infinite Mercy, will pour forth graces to save the soul from going to hell.
